Teddy

Teddy was just like your best friend. You never had a bear as lovely as Teddy.
Teddy seems to always follow you where ever you go, holding on to that right hand of yours which just refuse to let it go.
School is always better off with Teddy sitting beside you.
Teddy shares your lunch too, so that you don’t have to eat those nasty greens.
Bedtime’s a nightmare without Teddy, hugging him always makes you feel so much better.
And you even go to the bathroom with Teddy! There’s simply nothing to hide.
You really adore Teddy and his company.
One day, Mommy tells you that you are addicted to Teddy. And that she needs to keep Teddy away from you – for your own good. That’s what they always say.
When you rubbed your eyes awake from bed one day, you realise the usual warm and cuddling tuft is nowhere to be found. Mommy has really taken Teddy.
You run to Mommy, on the verge on tears.
You asked her for Teddy to be back. She wouldn’t listen.
You told Mommy you would be good if she returns Teddy to you. She wouldn’t listen.
You said to her that you would eat the veggies no matter how nasty they taste, if only she returns Teddy. She wouldn’t listen.
You even promised to get full marks for the next Math Test just for Teddy to be back. She wouldn’t listen.
Suddenly, you feel a familiar warmth trickling down your cheeks. You are crying. You really want Teddy back. You would do everything just to be able to bring Teddy to school again. You really miss Teddy. And you wonder if Teddy misses you.
No more would you stand and wait. You want to get down to action and find missing Teddy. You ransacked Mommy’s wardrobe, and turned her favourite accessories box inside out. You searched every pocket of Mommy’s dress, and turned out every pouch in her handbag. You crawled under the bed and climb over the kitchen racks, but Teddy just doesn’t seem to be anywhere. Mommy is fuming though, but you only care about Teddy.
Suddenly, school don’t seem all that fun anymore. You sulk at lunch and Mommy nags you for not eating your greens. You can’t fall asleep at night and you don’t look forward to the evening baths anymore.
Suddenly, everything seems so quiet. Nobody appears to be smiling and laughing anymore. You wonder when Teddy would be back. You tell yourself that everything will turn out right the moment Teddy’s with you again.
So you sat down and wait.
You waited, and waited, and waited.
The seconds ticked to minutes and then to hours.
Days became weeks, and weeks became months.
But, you still hope to see Teddy once again.
Three months later, Teddy miraculously appeared by your pillow when it’s time for bed.
You were silent for a moment.
Teddy is back. Yes, Teddy is back.
You think you are happy, but you don’t feel the soar of joy within.
You feel sad, but see no reason to be.
You are simply unsure.
You tried hugging Teddy the way you used to. Bringing his furry head so close to your chest, and squeezing it with all you’ve got. Hmm….strange.
You gave a deep sniff at Teddy’s tummy like you used to do. Hmm…strange.
You stare at Teddy for some time, looking at the bear that you once called your best friend. Hey, wait. Did I say once?
Suddenly, you realise that Teddy doesn’t feel the same. Teddy doesn’t smell the same too. Teddy don’t even look the same. Teddy is just not the same anymore.
And then you wonder why. All these days, weeks and months, you had been wailing for Teddy, begging for Teddy, searching for Teddy and waiting for Teddy. Now that Teddy is back, it doesn’t feels the same. It feels like Teddy ain’t your best friend anymore. It feels like you don’t know Teddy anymore. The old Teddy then seems gone.
And you wonder why.
